The Yaquina Bay Yacht Club of Newport hosts an adult learn-to-sail beginners’ class on six non-consecutive days in August.

No sailing experience is necessary to experience beginning small boat sailing, only a desire to learn in a class that covers sailing fundamentals, sailboat parts and rigging, boating safety, weather and tides, navigational aids and more. Class size is limited to 12 students, on-water sessions will be taught in two-person Club 420 sailboats, and classroom sessions to be hosted at the YBYC clubhouse, 750 SE Bay Blvd.

Students are responsible for attending each class session and provide themselves with a light wetsuit, footwear, gloves, a personal floatation device (lifejacket), extra clothing and a sack lunch.

The class schedule is as follows:

The class costs $450 for yacht club non-members or $225 for members. Payment is due by Aug. 4 and comes with an instruction book. Up to 50 percent of the cost of the class may be applied later to a YBYC new-membership fee.
